The Language Centre hosted its first English corner of the Fall 2026 term on September 19, bringing the students into a world of treasure hunts and quick thinking. The event, titled “Roll to speak” was facilitated by Vicki Xu and saw students take on roles of adventurers navigating a live-action role playing game, all conducted in English.

Students came from diverse departments across the school to take part in the session. Each team of students navigated various encounters to retrieve a legendary artifact. Each obstacle could only be overcome through spoken English, where students narrated their actions, persuaded enemies, described sneaky maneuvers, and negotiated with bosses. With words as tools, every sentence moved the story forward.

This session distinctively made English the medium of play, to help students use English without reciting dialogues, but simply by making decisions and reacting in real-time to unexpected outcomes. Under the context of a game, students who might normally hesitate to speak up in discussions found themselves arguing passionately for their chosen strategy with laughter and enthusiasm.

English Corner continues regularly throughout the term with a range of activities led by different facilitators. Whether you’re looking to practice conversation, build vocabulary, or try something new, there is always a seat at the table. Keep an eye on the notice below for upcoming sessions.
