Notice on Applying for Exemption from Degree-Required Foreign Language Courses

I. English Course Exemption

(Applicable to graduate students whose primary foreign language is English)

1. Eligibility Criteria

Graduate students who have attained a high level of English proficiency prior to admission and meet any of the following conditions may apply for exemption from English courses after enrollment:

(1) TOEFL iBT score of 100 or above;

(2) IELTS score of 7.0 or above;

(3) GRE (new scale) score of 310 or above;

(4) GMAT score of 650 or above;

(5) Duolingo English Test score of 135 or above;

(6) A pass in the TEM-8 administered by the National Advisory Committee for Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education;

(7) CET-6 score of 600 or above;

(8) A Bachelor's degree or higher obtained in an English-speaking country or region through English-medium instruction;

(9) Completion of 6 months or more of English-medium coursework at an overseas institution, as arranged by Tsinghua University, with at least two-thirds of course grades at B level or above, and no failed or unpassed courses;

(10) Authorship of at least one peer-reviewed academic paper in English published or accepted at an international journal or conference as the first author, with oral proficiency confirmed through a speaking test conducted by the Language Centre.

2. Required Documentation

Applicants must submit the corresponding supporting documents based on the above criteria.

3. Application Procedure

Qualified students may apply after enrollment by submitting an exemption request and the required documentation via the designated system, following the timeline and instructions issued by the Language Centre.

II. Exemption Criteria for Chinese Language Courses for International Graduate Students

For international graduate students, Chinese is a required foreign language course carrying 2 credits. Students who meet either of the following conditions may apply for exemption:

Achieved HSK Level 6 within two years prior to enrollment, with scores of at least 80 in Listening, 70 in Reading, and 60 in Writing.

After enrollment, submit an exemption request and supporting documentation via the Tsinghua Info, as per the Language Centre's instructions and within the designated period.

Obtained a Bachelor's degree or higher from a university in China, with Chinese as the language of instruction.
